Red Wasps in Texas — How to Identify Them and When to Call
If you’ve got a slim, rusty-red wasp with smoky wings building an open, umbrella-shaped nest under your eave or in a shrub — that’s a red wasp, a type of paper wasp, and they’re all over North Texas in the warm months. Here’s what you actually need to know.
Red Wasp vs. Yellow Jacket — Tell Them Apart in Seconds
Most people calling about a “red wasp” actually have one of two things. Here’s the fast version:
Red Wasp vs. Yellow Jacket — Side by Side
Red Wasp (Paper Wasp)
- Color: Reddish-brown with smoky or dark wings
- Body: Long-legged, slender, pinched waist
- Nest: Open umbrella-shape — honeycomb you can see, usually under eaves or in shrubs
- Aggression: Will sting near the nest; less frenzied than yellow jackets
- Stinger: Smooth — can sting multiple times
Yellow Jacket
- Color: Bright yellow and black banding
- Body: Shorter, stockier, less pronounced waist
- Nest: Hidden — in the ground, inside wall cavities, or under structures; you often can’t see the nest
- Aggression: Very high — swarms fast when disturbed, especially near the ground nest
- Stinger: Smooth — stings multiple times without dying
Not sure which you have? Describe it when you call — we can usually tell you over the phone what you’re dealing with and what it’ll take to clear it.
Are Red Wasps Dangerous?
Their sting hurts and they can sting more than once. For most people it’s painful but not serious — but for anyone with a sting allergy, a red wasp sting can trigger a severe reaction that needs immediate medical attention.
⚠️ If you have a known sting allergy: Don't approach the nest. Carry your epinephrine auto-injector and call 911 if you're stung. Then call us to remove the nest — you shouldn't be anywhere near it.
In general, a red wasp foraging away from its nest isn’t looking for a fight. But get within a foot or two of the nest, especially if there are eggs or larvae in it, and they’ll defend it. Don’t swat at them — that signals threat. Move away calmly.
Where Red Wasps Nest in Texas
Red wasps build open, papery, umbrella-shaped nests in sheltered spots around your home’s exterior. Common spots in North Texas:
- Under eaves and overhangs
- In dense shrubs and hedges
- Under deck and porch boards
- In garage door track channels
- Inside outdoor outlet covers
- On window and door frames
- In attic vents and soffits
- Inside outdoor furniture
The nests are usually visible — papery, gray-brown, open-faced. A small one is the size of a golf ball; a large late-summer colony can be a foot across with hundreds of wasps.
DIY or Call a Pro? Here's the Honest Answer
We’d rather tell you the truth than sell you a job you don’t need
A single small nest you can reach safely, in daylight, when you’re not allergic — sometimes, yes, you can handle it yourself. A can of wasp spray at dusk when they’re all in the nest, from a safe distance. That’s a reasonable DIY call.
But call a pro when: the nest is up high or inside a soffit or wall, it’s near a doorway or kids’ play area, the nest is large, or if anyone in the household has a sting allergy. Those are the jobs where a wrong move matters, and we’ve got the gear and the 45 years to do it right.

What Dallas homeowners ask us most
Red wasps are reddish-brown, long-legged, and slender with smoky or dark wings. They build open, umbrella-shaped nests you can usually see. Yellow jackets are shorter, bright yellow-and-black, and nest in the ground or inside wall cavities — you often can't see the nest until you've disturbed it. The visible open nest is the clearest tell for a red wasp.
They can be, especially near the nest. A red wasp foraging away from its nest is usually not looking for trouble. But get near the nest and they'll defend it — and unlike honeybees, they can sting multiple times. They're generally less frenzied than yellow jackets when disturbed, but don't let that make you complacent near a large nest.
Yes. Red wasps (like all paper wasps and yellow jackets) have smooth stingers and can sting multiple times without dying. If you're stung, move away from the nest calmly but quickly — don't swat, as that triggers the others.
